A Dreamlike Escape: MPNYC’s Vision for Athens’ Koumkan Restaurant

In a bold reimagination of Athens’ dining scene, Manhattan Projects NYC (MPNYC) has transformed Koumkan into a mesmerizing, cinematic sanctuary. Commissioned by entrepreneur and art collector Dakis Joannou, the space embodies a seamless fusion of surreal design and immersive luxury.

Descending into the restaurant, guests are met with a monumental travertine portal and mirrored doors that hint at the kaleidoscopic interiors within. The foyer, bathed in a soft rose hue, features book-matched travertine walls that meet expansive mirrors, amplifying space and light. Beyond a concealed mirror door, a dramatic green marble parlor—sourced from Greece’s Tinos island—envelops banquettes, bar, and DJ booth, illuminated by custom horizontal chandeliers and vintage 1960s sconces.

At the heart of Koumkan, the Grande Salle blends a lounge, cocktail bar, and restaurant into an awe-inspiring vertical space, where mirrored walls extend its depth and seating glows with integrated lighting. Plush pink moiré bench seating and tropical greenery create a striking interplay between softness and structure, seamlessly connecting to the poolside veranda. Here, pink terracotta walls, herringbone travertine flooring, and polished chrome furnishings evoke the effortless glamour of the 1950s Mediterranean Riviera.

More than a restaurant, Koumkan is an experience—where design, light, and texture come together in an exquisite, dreamlike harmony.
